Brentwood, Tennessee, February 13, 2006
No one knows exactly how much of the millions of miles in the U.S. sewer system is leaking at any given time. Independent studies estimate as high as 75%. A Nashville, Tennessee based company, in concert with a German manufacturing giant, is bringing a high tech solution to the problem of sewer pipe rehabilitation.
On February 13, 2006, International Pipe Lining Technologies (iPL) renewed a 270-foot section of 12-inch sewer pipe, near a shopping mall in suburban Brentwood, Tennessee. Super high strength stitch-bonded fiberglass, impregnated with an unsaturated polystyrene resin, was used. Robots thoroughly inspected and prepared the pipe for the lining, with operators above analyzing digital video images and data using sophisticated software. The resin was cured by sending a robot down the pipe trailing a string of ultra-violet light-emitting canisters. The 6-hour operation was the first of its kind in the United States. Usually, this kind of repair would be done using a felt liner cured by hot water or steam, with a lower percentage rate of success.
Richard Rigsby, Inspections Coordinator for the City of Brentwood, observed the installation “We’re pleased with what we’ve seen here today, and are impressed with this as a more lasting solution to sewer pipe renewal here in Brentwood,” he said. “Plus, we’d like to be able to fix these problems without tearing peoples’ yards and streets up, and this allows us to do that.”
The new high tech solution is made possible by iPL’s exclusive use in the Americas and Canada of SAERTEX-LINER®, the super strong fiberglass fabric made by German firm SAERTEX multiCom® GmbH, together with iPL’s proprietary OpenEye™ installation process and EyeBotix™ technology.
iPL will perform installations throughout the Americas and Canada similar to the one in Tennessee, in lengths of up to 1600 feet. The efficient and environment-friendly process is expected to save billions of dollars over what it would cost to dig up and replace failing sewer pipes.
